Medea

by Euripides
Translated by Robin Robertson

15–19 November 2017

Medea: mother, wife, sorceress, refugee, murderer. When the Greek hero Jason arrives at Colchis, the princess Medea falls passionately in love with him and helps him steal the Golden Fleece. As a result, she is cast out of her kingdom and forced to raise their children in exile. However several years later, Medea is betrayed. After seeking refuge at Corinth, Jason has fallen for the princess Creusa, daughter of King Creon. Refusing to passively be cast aside for a younger woman, Medea plans her revenge on Jason. Revenge that once unleashed will destroy everything Jason holds dear. The play deals with the themes of motherhood, gender identity, immigration, divorce and adultery; proving how Medea is as relevant today as it was in Ancient Greece.
